Alternative to Braces for Teens

Braces offer an appropriate solution for many kids who have diverse orthodontic needs. Though braces can get you a healthy smile, there might be various reasons a family or a teen would want to avoid braces. Reasons like aesthetics, pain, and costs play a crucial factor in determining the type of orthodontic treatment a teen prefers.

At Roy B. Guster, DDS PC in Chicago, we will provide the correct information on the different alternatives available to help you decide on how to rectify your teen’s orthodontic issues. Here are some alternatives that can be opted for instead of the braces.

Ceramic Braces

If your teen feels particularly conscious about how metal braces would affect their appearance, ceramic braces might be a good selection. They are as good as metal braces, but they are less evident. Ceramic brackets can be transparent or tooth-colored, and some wires can also be tooth-colored.

However, considering the materials used, they do cost a little more than traditional metal braces. Besides, your teen would also need to be careful when eating or drinking any colorful foods, which could stain the braces.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are commonly known by their brand name, such as Invisalign. It is a suitable alternative to fixed braces for less severe orthodontic problems. They are removable and virtually invisible, providing a discreet alternative to braces. Invisalign even has Invisalign Teen that is specifically made for teenagers.

If you decide on Invisalign treatment for your teen, they will be given a series of aligners which they have to wear for two weeks each. The clear aligners will have to be worn for at least 22 hours each day, only removing them to eat and brush. The treatment will be delayed if the aligners are not worn for the specified duration.

However, Invisalign and braces work differently and are also priced differently. Given the enormous manufacturing costs associated with Invisalign, it usually comes out as a more expensive option than standard braces.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are also preferred for their discretion. They are attached to the inside of the teeth and are invisible. However, they can cause problems with the speech, making it sometimes incoherent.

Retainers

A retainer can be attached to the inside of the mouth and is non-invasive. This is an excellent option if the misalignment isn’t severe and the teen needs only a minor correction.

These popular alternatives that patients should consider are still as effective as traditional braces. Our team at Roy B. Guster, DDS PC in Chicago understands how braces can make young teens self-conscious, and we are here to help them overcome their hesitations.
